You have the photo. We handle everything that turns it into a premium jigsaw puzzle worth keeping. Upload your image, choose 500 or 1000 pieces, and we take it from there: colour calibration, a resolution check at actual print size, precision die-cutting on premium chipboard, and shipping in a matte sleeve box with your image on the lid.

The finished puzzle measures 530x390mm, fits a standard 50x70cm frame, and arrives looking like a product, not a rushed printout. If you want to give it as a gift or keep it as a display piece, it holds up to both.

How to make a custom puzzle from a photo

Step 1: Upload your photo

Upload a JPG, PNG, or TIFF directly from your phone, computer, or cloud storage. We accept most common formats and file sizes. Minimum recommended resolution is 1500px on the short edge; higher files print sharper at 530x390mm.

Step 2: We enhance it for print

Unlike services that auto-process uploads and hope for the best, Puzzably runs a pre-press check on every order. We review the colour profile, check sharpness at the actual output size, and confirm the crop sits where you intended. If something looks off, we reach out before printing.

Step 3: Printed on premium board

Your photo goes to print at 300dpi on thick chipboard with a soft-touch laminate surface. The board is heavier than mass-market photo puzzles and the laminate gives pieces a clean, tactile finish. Die-cutting is calibrated so pieces click together firmly without forcing.

Step 4: Shipped in a giftable box

The completed puzzle ships in a matte sleeve box with your image printed on the lid. It arrives assembled-quality, ready to give or keep. Production takes 3 to 5 business days; US shipping adds 2 to 5 days.

What makes a great puzzle photo?

Not every image makes an equally satisfying puzzle. Here is what works best.

High contrast and varied colour. Puzzles with large areas of a single flat colour (a plain blue sky, a white wall) are genuinely harder to assemble and less satisfying to look at finished. Photos with tonal variety, texture, or multiple subjects give puzzlers something to work with in every section.

Sharpness at output size. A photo that looks fine on a phone screen may print soft at 530mm wide. The pre-press check catches this, but the best outcome is always a sharp source file. If you are scanning a physical print, scan at 600dpi or higher.

Meaningful content. The best puzzle photos are ones you would be glad to frame when they are done: a landscape with real atmosphere, a portrait that captures an expression, a travel photo with layers of detail. Puzzle assembly takes time, so the image rewards attention.

Faces and group photos. These work extremely well and are among the most popular custom puzzle choices. The familiarity of the faces makes assembly more rewarding, not less.

A puzzle from your photo vs a ready-made design

If you have the right photo, a custom puzzle from your image is personal in a way no catalog design can match. A photo from a wedding, a trip, a pet, a childhood memory brings context that a stranger's art cannot carry.

If you want something with an art-object quality and you are open to a design that is not your own photo, browse the Puzzably catalog. Original artist designs in styles like watercolor, oil painting, and minimalist are made to display. Some customers order both: one custom photo puzzle as a gift, and one catalog design for their own shelf.

Photo puzzle gift ideas

A custom photo puzzle from Puzzably travels well as a gift. Here are the requests we see most often.

Family photos. Multi-generation portraits, holiday gatherings, new baby shots. The 500 piece count is popular for family gifts because it is completable in a single sitting.

Pet photos. Dogs, cats, horses. Pet owners consistently rate photo puzzles as one of the most thoughtful gifts they have received. Use a high-contrast shot with good background separation for the sharpest result.

Travel and landscape. A meaningful travel photo on premium board and framed after assembly becomes a piece of wall art that also tells a story.

Couples and milestones. Anniversaries, engagements, and first-home photos. The matte sleeve box packaging makes a clean gift presentation with no additional wrapping needed.

Our promise

Your photo goes through a pre-press review before it prints: a colour profile check, a sharpness pass at full output size, and a crop confirmation. If the image will not hold up at 530x390mm, we tell you before we print, not after the box arrives.

Each puzzle is made on premium board, cut into 500 or 1000 pieces, and finished to sit on display in a clear acrylic case. If a puzzle arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum photo resolution I need?

We recommend at least 1500px on the short edge for a result that prints cleanly at 530x390mm. Larger files give sharper output. We run a sharpness check before printing and will flag files that are likely to print below our quality threshold.

Can I submit a photo I took on my phone?

Yes. Modern smartphones capture more than enough resolution for a sharp 530x390mm print, provided the photo is in focus and reasonably well lit. Low-light or heavily blurred photos will not improve in the pre-press process; start with the sharpest version you have.

Can I crop or reposition the image before it prints?

Yes. The upload tool lets you adjust crop and zoom before placing your order. You can also add a note with specific positioning requests and we will confirm before printing.

What happens if my photo does not meet the quality threshold?

We will contact you before printing with the specific issue and options: you can supply a higher-resolution file, adjust the crop to a sharper area of the image, or choose a different photo. We do not print files we know will look bad.

Can I make more than one copy of the same puzzle?

Yes. You can order multiple copies of the same photo puzzle in the same transaction. Discount pricing for larger quantities is available; contact us to discuss.

How is this different from Shutterfly or a drugstore photo puzzle?

The main differences are print quality, board weight, and how the finished object is designed to be used. Drugstore and big-box photo puzzles are optimised for low cost and fast turnaround. Puzzably is optimised for the result looking and feeling like something you want to keep. The pre-press check, heavier board, frame-compatible size, and matte sleeve packaging are all part of that. See our comparison pages for a side-by-side breakdown.
